Course Description

This Kickstarter course on Working in the Pet Care Sector will give learners an introduction into various career options such as, dog walking, pet sitting, home boarding and working in a pet shop.

During the course, you will have the opportunity to learn about environmental enrichment, first aid, body language, handling techniques, grooming and feeding.

The course also looks at employability skills and the benefits of volunteering to gain experience.

Once you have completed the course you will have the basic understanding needed to look for entry job opportunities in the pet care sector and consider further training and qualifications.

Unit # 1

Dog Walking, Pet Sitting and Home Boarding

On completion of this unit you will:

  • Lean about the equipment needed
  • Understand the techniques of fear free training
  • Learn about health checks
  • Understand how to safely manage animals in the home environment
  • Study animal identification and record keeping

Unit # 2

Working in a Pet Shop, Environments Enrichment and First Aid

On completion of this unit you will:

  • Learn about the care of small animals
  • Understand how to advise customers
  • Study environmental enrichment
  • Gain first aid knowledge

Unit # 3

Body Language, Handling Techniques, Grooming and Feeding

  • Study the body language of dogs, cats and small animals

Careers within the Pet Care Sector

There are approximately 4,000 pet shops and 600 aquatic centres in the UK, employing over 20,000 people between them. Careers in this line of work involve the option of working for an established pet shop, or of setting up your own business.

Working with animals and running your own pet care business can be the ideal career for many people. Increasingly people are using Dog Walking, Pet Sitting and Dog Home Boarding to ensure their pets are well cared for whilst they are away or working during the day.

Running your own pet care business can be an extremely rewarding way to combine a love of animals with earning an income. Different businesses working with pets include dog walking, dog and cat grooming, dog home boarding, animal behaviourist, pet shop manager, pet taxis and more. For those who provide good quality care for animals, there are always returning customers.

Developing your Career within Pet Care Sector
