1. It can increase your chance of finding a job working with animals.

Companies are always looking for workers who have volunteering or hands-on experience. Working for an Animal Rescue Centre can be an extremely rewarding animal care career opportunity and most of these jobs require relevant training. There are many different types of animal charities and consequently, a large variety of careers and jobs.

Working as a volunteer or getting work experience will also increase your chances of finding a job in animal rescue and welfare.

2. It can give you a sense of purpose.

Providing hands-on care for animals and improving their quality of life will give you an extra spring in your step. Many professionals working in Animal welfare have reported that their jobs are highly stimulating and extremely rewarding. Knowing that you are making a difference to improving animal welfare will provide you give you a new sense of purpose.

Sadly, it is estimated that over 250,000 animals are sent to rescue centres each year, a lot of them never go on to be homed. There are many Animal charities that are struggling with the increase of animals to their shelters and are always seeking friendly, trained, and enthusiastic people to join their teams.

3. It may provide other animal training opportunities.

Working for an animal charity and dealing with the Kennel or Cattery Management side of things is quite different from the work of a private boarding business.

There are additional roles when working for an animal charity and these include re-homing animals, behavioural assessments, health checks, kennel cleaning, dog walking, ensuring there is enrichment for the animals in long term care and more.

If you have an interest in seeking a role at an Animal Shelter, Rescue or Kennel then we recommend that you explore these two exciting roles.

The Kennel or Cattery Manager may be responsible for recruitment, staff training, daily routines, general management and maintaining high standards of care and hygiene throughout the kennels as well as dealing with marketing the business and customer care.

Animal Welfare Officer or Inspector

Working as an Animal Welfare Officer is a rewarding career choice. It can be compared to working as a social worker for animals. As a Welfare officer you must identify animals at risk, assist local councils and animal charities with animal welfare problems, provide talks to schools and other organisations, and generally having a proactive approach to the prevention of cruelty to animals. Many animal welfare charities, local authorities and other organisations now employ Animal Welfare Officers.
