Study Mode Online theory, plus gathering of own practical evidence in a forest school setting.
Award Type Certificate - Learners can expect their certification within 6 months of completing the course, following the (EQA) External Quality Assurance of assessment. All course fees, inclusive of all payment plans including our Premium Credit Limited option, must be settled before certification can be ordered.
Assessment Method Assessment will take the form of a range of in-depth theory assessments for each unit along with a combination of video and photo submissions taken during the practical. Your supervisor will also need to provide witness testimonies.

Entry Criteria This qualification is suitable for learners aged 19+. Please note, the minimum age for Forest School Leaders is 21. This is a Forest School Association and Department for Education requirement.

Practical Training This course includes a mandatory practical placement, which you will need to arrange yourself. The placement you arrange can be organised and completed at any point in the course.
Post Completion Upon completion of this course, you can register as a Forest School Leader from age 21 with the Forest School Association (FSA).

About Your Qualification

The Level 3 Certificate for Forest School Leaders qualification is designed to meet the needs of teachers and teaching assistants, adults and professionals in training as a Forest School Leader so that they can plan and lead groups in Forest School programmes and activities. 

Achievement of the qualification will help organisations acquire the ‘Learning outside the Classroom’ (LOTC) quality badge and the yellow LOTC mark for meeting the quality standards set by the Forest School Association.

This Ofqual regulated qualification has been developed with the support of the Forest School Association and specialists in Forest School delivery and training.  

During this comprehensive qualification, students will learn the necessary theory on five core topics which include: 

•    Delivery 
•    Learning and Development 
•    Planning and Preparation 
•    Practical Skills 
•    The Woodland Environment 

This qualification includes a mandatory practical placement, which students will need to arrange themselves. The placement can be organised and completed at any point in the course.

Upon successful completion of the qualification, learners will be able to set up and run a Forest School programme, facilitate groups in a learner-centred way and manage a Forest School site sustainably. Learners may choose to progress onto further study or employment in the outdoors. 

What You Will Study:

Unit 1

Unit 1: Forest School Programme: Delivery 

Learners will gain knowledge and skills to facilitate and evaluate a Forest School Programme.

Unit 2

Unit 2: Forest School Programme: Learning and Development

Learners will understand the Forest School Principles and approach to learning and development, including the value of play and the impact of behaviour on learning and development.

Unit 3

Unit 3: Forest School Programme: Planning and Preparation

Learners will gain introductory knowledge and understanding of the Forest School pedagogy and approach to learning and development. Learners will be able to manage the ecological impact of a Forest School programme and be able to develop the underpinning documents required.

Unit 4

Unit 4: Forest School Programme: Practical Skills

Learners will gain practical skills and be able to teach practical skills to Forest School participants with a clear understanding of safety requirements.

Unit 5

Unit 5: Forest School Programme: The Woodland Environment 

Learners will gain knowledge of the benefits of woodlands, their structures and management. Learners will know how to identify a range of flora and fauna and understand the importance of identification.

Career Progression

This qualification is designed to enable learners to progress to further study in Forest School training and other subjects within the wider ‘Horticulture and Forestry’ sector. The qualification can enable learners to progress into employment, for example as a Forest School Leader. The qualification could provide progression to:

• Foundation Degree in Environmental Conservation Management
• BSC Rural Land Management
• Forestry and Arboriculture Course

This qualification will support learners who are starting on their journey to a career working in the Forest Schools sector, or aspire to be a Forest School Leader, and aims to increase the prospects of gaining employment in the future.
