Animal Transportation Legal Requirements

When transporting animals, the welfare and safety of the animals in your care is of paramount importance. The Animal Welfare Act 2006 sets out the duty of care that owners and keepers have to ensure that the animals in their care have their needs met.

The Act states that animals need:

  • A suitable environment and place to live
  • A suitable diet
  • To exhibit normal behaviour patterns
  • To be housed with, or apart from, other animals (if applicable)
  • To be protected from pain, injury, suffering and disease

Anyone who does not provide for an animal's welfare needs may:

  • Be banned from owning animals
  • Face an unlimited fine
  • Be sent to prison for up to 6 months

The Level 3 Award in Companion Animal Transportation will ensure that you have an understanding of the legal requirements and responsibilities of safely transporting companion animals.
