The qualification also covers health care, common diseases and the basic welfare needs of birds of prey along with their nutritional requirements. Learners will have the chance to explore situations when birds of prey may need emergency care and how to plan for dealing with them before looking at the rehabilitation and re-release processes for birds of prey.

The Birds of Prey practical consists of theory and practical training and includes 1 comprehensive practical training day with Wye Valley Falconry, based in Herefordshire.

The day will be delivered by an experienced falconer with over 14 years of experience working and flying a diverse variety of birds of prey.

This practical offers a fantastic opportunity for learners to put their theory training into practice and have a hands-on experience with birds of prey. The day will cover topics such as –

  • Diet

Threats that birds of prey face in the UK

The good news is that many of our birds of prey have recovered significantly from historical threats such as human interference and pesticide poisoning. However, there is much work still to do to ensure a healthy future for species such as the Golden Eagle and Hen Harrier. These species are vulnerable and require extra support to boost their numbers.

We can assist birds of prey in many ways such as:

  • Ensuring that their welfare and conservation is kept as a top priority.
  • Educating others about birds of prey and their natural behaviours, habitats, and reproduction.

This help will ensure that these species thrive and exist for future generations to enjoy in their wild and natural habitats.
