Wildlife Conservation Practical Placement Java Indonesia

Wildlife Conservation Practical Indonesia

This is a 2 week practical wildlife conservation course with the wildlife and orangutan project in Java, Indonesia.

Students assist with the rehabilitation of orphaned and injured animals and with the release of recovered animals to the wild – this is one of the most satisfying things you can do.

This is a fantastic way of gaining hands on animal care experience.  We include the accredited Level 3 Certificate in Wildlife Care and Conservation as part of this practical placement.

This Wildlife Conservation Rescue Centre is providing animals poached out of the wild rain forests of Borneo a second chance. They currently have 5 orangutans each with a sad story of how humans have mistreated them. All are orphans after poachers killed their parents in the lush tropical rainforests of Borneo. The centre is home now for 3 of these Orangutans who don’t stand a chance of being able to be rehabilitated back to the wild. However, two of the younger orangutans are on the waiting list to join a rehabilitation centre back on their home island, Borneo.

Wildlife Conservation Indonesia

Sadly as a result of the rapid destruction of Indonesia’s rain forests, hundreds of orangutans and other critically endangered species are dying. The orphaned young are frequently sold into the illegal exotic pet trade, condemned to spend their lives in cramped cages, eating unsuitable diets and performing dangerous and demeaning tricks for human entertainment.

This wildlife conservation rescue facility receives animals confiscated from illegal ownership under the Protected Wildlife Law and wherever possible, prepares them for eventual rehabilitation. Those who cannot be returned to the wild due to health or behavioural conditions will be cared for by the Centre. Please note this is not a zoo and tourists cannot visit unless they are volunteers or students attending this programme.

One of the most satisfying things about the wildlife conservation centre is how 25 out of 31 staff are from the local villages. This allows the local villages to benefit, through employment, from helping animals and this helps spread environmental and animal welfare awareness amongst the villagers. The centre is famous for rehabilitating and releasing injured eagles and other raptors including the highly endangered Javan Eagle. They also have gibbons, crocodiles and many other species of birds.

Many of the animal enclosures are small and not intended as permanent accommodation.  Students assist with building new cages as required. This Centre doesn't receive any external funding and has to make do with limited resources. Every effort is made to continually improve the facilities and enrich the environments for all wildlife in the Centre's care. By volunteering here you will not only be enriching the lives of the animals undergoing rehabilitation, but in addition, your financial support through enrolment helps to improve the future for these animals.

Working with a different group of animals and with various keepers each day, you will experience the full spectrum of wildlife at this Centre. You will participate in cage cleaning, feeding, food preparation, maintenance and cage enrichment and spend a morning with the Centre's vet; this provides the perfect opportunity to observe and learn about the animals and wildlife conservation.

As a wildlife conservation student, you will not only get your hands dirty by cleaning cages of the animals, but also help to provide greater benefits to the local villagers. This is a fantastic opportunity to gain hands-on experience with wildlife in a rescue environment. This programme is perfect for anyone passionate about animals. On your days off there are plenty of temples to visit and some beautiful beaches where Sea Turtles nest.

This is a 2 week placement at the Centre and the fees include dormitory accommodation, 3 meals per day and airport pick up. There is a communal lobby area with a television, where wildlife conservation volunteers can socialise and also enjoy meals together. All meals are included and students have access to a stove, refrigerator and washing machine. Shared (single sex) twin rooms with en suite (cold) shower and western style toilet. Rooms come with air-con, drinking water dispenser and tea / coffee facilities. All rooms have private balconies where you can dry laundry or simply relax overlooking the forest.
