Turtle Conservation Practical Placement Perhentian Islands, Malaysia

Turtle Conservation Practical

This is a 2 week Turtle Conservation practical placement where students can get involved in a meaningful conservation project in a paradise beach location and gain valuable hands on marine conservation experience.

An accredited Level 3 Marine Animal Rescue/Conservation/Zoology/Biology/Ichthyology/Sea Turtle Diploma course is included with this practical placement. This turtle conservation practical project aims to promote more comprehensive understanding and protection of the population of sea turtles around the beautiful tropical Perhentian Islands.

Students have the opportunity to assist local government and researchers with the collection of scientific data. This is gained by snorkelling and taking photos of turtles, the scales on the flippers and the side of a green turtles face are unique to each individual. The photos are used to identify individual turtles in order to build up the turtle research photo database which is used as part of an important sea turtle conservation management plan for the islands.

Turtle Conservation  Perhentian Islands, Malaysia

This project runs from the 6th of April until the 14th of September 2020.

Students can:

Assist with beach clean ups and overnight beach patrols to ensure the safety of nesting turtles and their hatchlings.

Assist with educational outreach programmes in order to create better awareness about sea turtles among residents and tourists.

Snorkel and take photos of sea turtles for photo ID purposes.

This project is based at two locations – the village and the turtle beach. Volunteers follow a 3 day rota with a swap of locations.

Village Location: Volunteers stay in a traditional Malay house in the middle of the only village on the smaller of the Perhentian Islands (Perhentian Kecil).

Beach Location: Volunteers can sleep under the stars on the beach in a hammock or in a beach hut; the beach hut is very simple but sand free with air mattresses.
